Monster Bass Fishing offers a "free fishing" mode, where the player can perfect their fishing technique. Also they can experiment with bait and locations in order to learn what combinations work best.

These skills can then be used in the "Competition" mode. In this mode the player competes in timed events at each of the five lakes in turn, against computer opponents.

In order to proceed to the next lake the player must finish each round in the first, second or third place. Once all five lakes have been completed the player is awarded the Champions Trophy and a secret lake is opened up to the player.

The best six catches can be stored in the aquarium for later viewing.
