Strategy First, doing what they do best.

Nexagon

Over at the Strategy First booth, I was able to check out a new game called Naxagon. Nexagon is a sports-like combat game based in the distant future. Two teams of 6 players battle it out trying to destroy each other’s controller sphere. Your team will also accumulate points throughout the three periods of play. If neither sphere is destroyed, the team with the most points at the end of play wins the match. You will be able to choose your team from four different races, each with four separate classes per race. Each race and class has it’s own style of play. Slow, hulking power, to quick and agile skirmish abilities.

Nexagon reminds me a lot of an older board game called Blood Bowl. I imagine what Blood Bowl would be like in a video game implementation and Nexagon seemed a lot like what I picture. It plays like a modern RTS, with a sports-like theme. You have the ability to call time outs, do substitutions and there’s even a commentator. Nexagon gets my vote for ‘most interesting looking, oddball game’ at E3. It should arrive in stores soon.

WWII: Frontline Command

Another title at Strategy First that really caught my eye was WWII: Frontline Command. Frontline Command is a real-time strategy offering from the Bitmap Brothers. Upon first glance, Frontline Command looks like a Close Combat clone. When you dig further into the game you’ll discover there’s a bit more to it than simple combat mechanics. Like Close Combat, your units are presented in a realistic fashion, complete with morale, vehicles, air support, enhanced AI and line of sight. Frontline Command offers single and multiplayer modes. Single player consists of over two-dozen missions. You have two levels of difficulty to choose from: Recruit and Veteran. In Recruit mode, you won’t need to worry about managing your supply lines or ammunition. Veteran mode gives you the full monty of micromanagement yet still manages to keep the gameplay fast and simple.

The missions are based on real WWII scenarios. Each side of the conflict is equipped with their own authentic weapons of war. Multiplayer supports up to four players and also offers ten additional multiplayer maps. Frontline Command looks to be an interesting title for WWII strategy fans. Keep an eye out for it's release next month in June.
