Chess is a game of intense thought and planning. It is also a game that many people find boring. I find chess to be fun to play against other people and be able to study the person as much as the game. Fritz 9 Play Chess is a very good training tool for the people that want to improve their game and learn some of the most well known strategies. Unfortunately, if you don't have any real interest in chess, Fritz 9 isn't going to change your mind.

It is a very good training tool along with a way for people to hone their skills and learn some new moves. If you are tired of playing the old computerized chess boards, then this is a good way keep playing chess when you have the PC fired up and just want to play something other than a FPS.

The game play and controls are very good. The pieces are easily moved around the board using the mouse for all interactions. The game keeps you from doing illegal moves and allows you to undo your move if you happened to miss something. There is a very extensive analysis mode, which helps you analyze what you did as well as what you should do. Me though, I am a kamikaze chess player and would rather learn the hard way then have a computer tell me what I did wrong.

The graphics are very simple and plain. Nothing exciting, like chess pieces fighting for the spot or screaming as they are captured. Just good old-fashioned chess on a digitized board. Then again that isn’t what the developers were trying to do. They wanted to create a great chess game that helps teach and challenge every level of player. They have accomplished that goal.

There really isn’t a whole lot more to say other than the developers of Fritz 9 Play Chess have created a really solid chess game for the sake of playing chess. If you are a chess fan or enjoy playing once in a while and don’t have friends or family that play, then this game is a good one to get to help keep your A-game sharp. Hell, you might even learn a few new moves and strategies along the way.
