It's official! The next GTA on track for a 2004 release!
written by: James Cooper on 3/4/2004 3:35:56 PM

Rumored as one of any of a hundred titles, from Sin City, Tokyo, Bogota, or just plain old GTA 5, the next instalment of the Grand Theft Auto series finally gets an official name: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The title is set for an October 19th release.

This marks the last of the 3 original cities from the first Grand Theft Auto game to be converted to 3d, since GTA 3 was based off Liberty City, and Vice City was well, you know. In the original, San Andreas was based of the likeness of good ol' San Francisco.

Considering the unpresidented success of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, Rockstar has their hands full creating a game to surpass it's predecessors. Leslie Benzies, president of developer Rockstar North, acknowledged this by stating:

"We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values."

"In the past couple of years, we have put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure we do everything possible to exceed people's expectations with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," stated Sam Houser, president, Rockstar Games. "Even though we still have eight months to go, we are starting to become very proud of what we have achieved and we can't wait to get the game into players' hands."
This also marks the final title in the exclusitivity deal Rockstar has with Sony, but since the agreement was altered to allow the GTA double pack on Xbox, perhaps we may see San Andreas on Xbox sometime after it hits Playstation 2 this fall.

We'll have more as it develops.
