Ubisoft delivers the goods with Lunar Dragon Song for the Nintendo DS.

Lunar Dragon Song has proven itself to be both addictive and enjoyable. I found myself playing the game for hours on end without feeling like the time was dragging on. The introductory story sets the stage right away with the main characters and their world.

You assume the role as Jian and Lucia who are currently deliverers for Gad’s Express. The game starts out with you being responsible for delivering a package to Perit Village. Seems simple, but on your way you end up getting entangled in an adventure that just keeps getting larger and larger. Along with the main adventure, there are a multitude of delivery jobs and mini adventures you can do along the way, if you so desire.

The controls are very well suited for the Nintendo DS. You have the ability to use the touch screen for all controls, some control or no control. The developers allow you to use the touchscreen, the button controls or both at the same time to control the character’s movement as well as selections. During battle, the battle is displayed across both screens. During normal movement around the world, the touchscreen has the menu and movement functions with the characters and the environment on the upper screen. I found it very easy on the eyes since you were not forced to look back and forth between the two screens to see what was going on.

The graphics were simple but yet detailed enough to not get tedious and boring. The monsters that you battle each have their own distinct form of movement and attack. No you don’t see blood spurt all over the place, but the developers were not after this. They were trying to deliver an enjoyable and engrossing adventure, which was achieved.

Along the way you are able to develop your character by gaining higher and higher levels as well as meeting and controlling new characters along the way. No you do not get to create a new character or get to adjust each individual trait at each level, but you do get to control their abilities by buying and finding a large variety of items and clothing which give them various powers and skills.

The overall storyline is well written and has a good flow to it. As you go you learn more about the world and the state it is in. You are asked to help restore peace and return the world back to the way it was. The only issue I had was that it was not always easy to find the next task that you were supposed to do. I found myself forced to ask certain people within the town in a certain order to open up and learn about the next task you needed to accomplish. The mini adventures and jobs were easy since you just had to go to the Gad's express in town and take a new job. The main adventure was not always as easy to open up the next portion.

Despite this issue, I would still highly recommend this game. If you are in the mood to play a fun and addictive game that combines both adventure and rpg on the Nintendo DS, then take a look at Lunar Dragon Song. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I know I wasn’t.

Pros:
  • Excellent storyline
  • Good use of the DS
  • Easy to control
  • Easy to learn
Cons:
  • Can be tough to learn of the next task in the main adventure
  • Monsters in the individual areas do not get tougher as you gain levels making them easy to kill
