Origin shutting down in Austin

Caught a story on slashdot earlier this morning regarding EA shutting down the Austin branch of OSI (Origin).  I'm sure it won't be long before they close down the California branch as well.  Looks like the end may be drawing near for Origin.

I found a link off Bluesnews to yet another article regarding violence in video games, this time by Globetechnology.  It's all mainly uninformed, out of touch bullshit, until you get to the end where they say "parents need to pay attention to the ratings on video games and how much time their children spend playing them."  No sh** Sherlock!  This is what we (Gamers) have been telling you for the past 3 years (well, longer than that, actually).  If you're bored at work, picking your nose or otherwise seeking amusement, go give it a read.

321 Studios, creators of DVD X Copy, announced new copying software, Games X Copy, that will make backing up your games much easier. The line between piracy and legal backup is becoming blurred to some media outlets, but personally, I don't see a problem. DVD's get scratched from kids, loans to friends, etc, and 321's DVD X Copy has made MY life a lot easier. I look forward to the game copying version.

Sad news today as we learn that Black Isle Studios, makers of Fallout and Planescape: Torment, are going under. Fallout 3, which was under development, has been cancelled. It's future is now unknown.

Ownt.com's Engine Block section begins with the first part of a mulitpart feature with People Can Fly's Adrian Chmielarz as we talk about Painkiller's PAIN game engine. Part 1 is a basic intro to game engines and later parts will go into more depth and be more focused around Painkiller.

3D Gaming Daily has posted a review of Nikita Interactive's action/strategy title, Parkan: Iron Strategy. The game is already available in Europe, but won't be out in North America until March. Blending elements of RTS and Mechwarrior-style combat games, on paper Parkan appears to offer everything that a gamer could want. Unfortunately, feature lists rarely guarantee a quality gameplaying experience.

A new review at games xtreme is for The Mystery of the Druids, the spooky and druid filled adventure game from cdv and House of Tales.

"The game uses 2D pre-rendered backgrounds, which are very nicely detailed and animated, the characters however are 3D models and are made of up to 1000 polygons which for most of the time animate smoothly and integrate reasonably well into the backgrounds. While the backgrounds are very well detailed the game does load them very quickly...."

"The character animations have been done by motion capturing a real life actor and the character on the screen did move and fight in a very realistic way, so they seemed to have integrated it very well. Since the sun died on Arx, they are the most helpful allies humans ever had. Very few is known about the sisters, even their own origin is a mystery. They look like half woman and half snake. Their skin is covered with scales. Are they a species of a long forgotten race or simply mutated women? Nobody knows the answer.

Paradox Entertainment has announced that its upcoming role-playing game Valhalla Chronicles has just entered beta testing. The game is in joint development at Paradox Entertainment and Oblivion Entertainment, and it will let players assume the role of one of four different heroes in a variety of adventures. The game is set in a fantasy world based on Viking history around the years 800-1000, and it features a number of gods drawn from Viking mythology, including Thor, Odin, and Loke.

Cryo Networks has announced its upcoming online role-playing game Black Moon Chronicles: Winds of War. RPGDot has posted 15 more screenshots from Gothic. They were taken whilst writing our review, and they show off different locations in the game. Gothic has been released in Germany 2 months ago, and is still unreleased in the rest of the world, despite excellent reviews in german print magazines. The english version is finished, but no publisher announced so far.
